Awesome Notes
I bought another iPhone app last night. It appears that I am now playing a speculation game, because like I did with Agendus, I bought it more for what it will be able to do, than what it does now. Allow me to explain.
Awesome Notes, at $3.99 from the iTunes store, is definitely not cheap by iPhone app standards. It’s a beautiful little notes/memos replacement, though, and reminds me a lot of Treo Memo (Palm os) from Gx5. Awesome Notes provides a variety of backgrounds for your notes, as well as a number of fonts/sizes.
As you can see, you can choose backgrounds that go with the note. I copy/pasted all my old notes into Awesome Notes, and the only disappointment there was that I could not change the dates on them to match the original record date. Fortunately, I didn’t have many, so it won’t ever be a major issue. Right now, notes can be sorted alphabetically, or by date order. Searching is promised in an upcoming version.
One of the things that makes this notes app worthy of its "awesome" name, is the fact that you can put your notes in folders, and group them appropriately. There doesn’t seem to be a limit as to the number of folders you can create, although folder color and icon are currently rather limited. This is also something on the "coming soon" list.
So is this eye candy worth the price tag? No. Why did I purchase it then? Let me show you what they have planned in the version currently awaiting app store approval!
- Backup and Restore Notes with Google Docs
- Import and Export Notes you select with Google Docs
- Optional Password Protection feature for each folder
- More color options for folders
- More icons for folders
Syncing notes to Google Docs. The very thought sends shivers up and down my spine. I’m already a heavy Google Docs user, and I sync my calendar and contacts with Google as well. Yes, I am becoming a real Google fangirl. I trust Google, and actually want to keep everything with them. (Once they get task integration going, my life will be so much easier!) Right now the iPhone allows you to sync your notes to Outlook (bleh!) or MobileMe. Since Google does almost everything MoMe does at 100% less cost, this is a no-brainer for me.
Bridworks, the Awesome Notes creator, is also promising searchable notes in the next version, along with simple check lists, global folder fonts, and the ability to set your own photo as a folder icon or add a photo to a note. It’s a nice little app now, but I’m willing to take the gamble on it truly being awesome in the future.
