Tip Tap Tones for Windows-Phone

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  app review, apps, Chinese, education, language, language learning, Mandarin, Windows Phone    Posted date:  May 12, 2012  |  No comment

If there is a foreign language worth learning, then it must be Mandarin - the language spoken in mainland China and Taiwan. In recent years China has overtaken Japan and Germany, and is now the second largest economy of the world. And according to many analysts, in 10 years it will also overtake the USA. Here I am reviewing an app that helps you to teach yourself Mandarin language pronunciation. What is particular about this app is: it is made by Microsoft Research - a division of Microsoft that is working on products that are usually not directly commercialised (this app is free too). While...

Handwrite Notes for Windows Phone

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  app review, digitizer pen, handwriting, notes, Windows Phone    Posted date:  May 9, 2012  |  No comment

Pen computing is not dead, it was just in hibernation because Steve Jobs hated styluses (styli?) and promoted multi-touch screens without support for digitizer pen. But watch out, boys and girls! In the near future (last quarter of 2012) several Windows 8 powered touch tablet are coming and they will be both affordable (because powered by ARM processors so much cheaper than Tablet PC of old times) and supporting both multi-touch and (high precision) digitiser pen. In the meantime, to get a feel what to expect from Windows 8 touch tablets, we can take a look at Windows Phone 7.5 apps! Here...

Translator for Windows Phone – made by Microsoft

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  app review, applications, Microsoft, OCR, pattern recognition, Windows Phone    Posted date:  April 19, 2012  |  No comment

There are similar apps available for other platforms but they are not free. Here I am reviewing Microsoft Translator app that is not just translating texts that are typed with keyboard, texts on images and texts spoken, but it can translate texts offline! And this app is completely free. Most impressive is OFFLINE (!!!!!!) real-time translation that works in this way that you point your Windows Phone at some text written in other language (here, French): ... and then, even if you don't have any internet connection (I have tested it! it works!), you get translations overlayed over the original...

23andMe App for Windows Phone

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  apps, genetic testing, Microsoft, Windows Phone    Posted date:  April 12, 2012  |  No comment

Let's turn our attention away from all those cool kids playing with their iPhones and Androids and their fancy shmancy apps, and let's review a Windows Phone app, shall we? So, why do I review this app? Well, not because it is great by itself - it's little more than an RSS reader wrapped in an app generated (look ma, no coding!) by follow my feed service (also, young Skywalker, you can have your own Windows Phone app if you only sign up and submit such generated-from-RSS app to Microsoft's app hub - no need to worry about app rejection as Microsoft now is so needy that it accepts any app no matter...

So Long and thanks for all the apps…Handango

Back in the good ole days when I was a happy Palm os user, I had an account on Handango. I bought hundreds of quality apps from them. From Agendus to Pocket Tunes to Documents to Go - I plunked down my cash to support my growing habit. When it was evident that Palm was going the way of the dinosaur, I switched to Windows Mobile. And I gave Handango even more of my money. All the while, happy Blackberry users were doing likewise, and buying apps left and right, increasing the purchased apps database on Handango. Handango loved its customers, and loved the developers as well. How many of you remember...
