Editorial: Windows Phoneification of Xbox

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  Kinect, Microsoft, Windows Phone, Xbox    Posted date:  January 24, 2012  |  No comment

Windows Phoneification will get you sooner or later, even if you never buy a Windows Phone at all. The first step was, obviously, the release of Windows Phone cellphones. But since Android and iPhone are much more popular it is rather unlikely you will have contact with them. However, many people have Xbox at home, many people use Windows-powered PCs at home and work, and now the look and feel of Windows Phone - tiles - is spreading like a disease. While it may be understandable why Apple is iOSinizing the Mac OS: the huge success of iPhone and iPad. It is strange why Microsoft is pushing the user...

Nokia Lumia 800 review

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  HTC, Lumia, Mango, Nokia, Samsung, Windows Phone    Posted date:  November 2, 2011  |  No comment

Nokia is currently still the biggest cellphone vendor in the world, considering units sold and including non-smartphones like their S40 feature phones that are popular in India and South America (revenue-wise Samsung and Apple are bigger thanks to fat margins in smartphone area) And after the failure of their own operating systems (Symbian, Meego) Nokia decided to switch to Windows Phone from Microsoft. A Nokia phone powered by Windows Phone? Really? Yes, really, dude: In the middle of November 2011 in Europe and in 2012 in USA the first Nokia smartphones powered by Windows Phone are going...

On-device app development: Codify for iPad and TouchDevelop for Windows Phone

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  app development, Apple, apps, codify, iOS, Microsoft, touchdevelop, Windows Phone    Posted date:  October 28, 2011  |  No comment

3 years ago, in 2008, Apple started an app revolution (some say the 3rd computer revolution after the invention of the computer and the Internet) that has changed everything. Now we are reaching a phase in the app revolution where, metaphorically speaking, robots are making robots: apps can make apps inside of the mobile devices! Have you ever been commuting to work and thinking "if only I could spend this time interestingly?" or maybe you have been listening to a boring lecture of a professor and thought "I could play a game in my phone but it wouldn't be intellectually challenging enough..."?...

Smartphone War 3 : Revenge of the Fallen

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  Apple, iPhone, mac, Microsoft, Nokia, OS X, smartphone, Symbian, Windows, Windows Phone    Posted date:  October 8, 2011  |  2 Comments

We are now on the verge of the 3rd major phase of smartphone wars. Episode 3 if you like, or as I like to call it, Smartphone War 3. Let's take a short look back and let's predict what will be going on in smartphones in the next few years - after all how well one can predict is a primary measure of intelligence. Smartphone War 1 Before Smartphone War 1 started, Nokia-controlled Symbian (a mobile OS that originated from British EPOC mobile OS for PDAs) had the dominant market share. And as you can see from this graph, Microsoft's mobile operating system had a comfortable second or third...

DryCase

Posted by: Alli Flowers    Tags:  accessories, Android, camera, CTIA, DryCase, gadget, iPhone, Kin, protection, water, Windows Phone    Posted date:  April 30, 2011  |  No comment

Back in March at CTIA, I discovered the DryCase. I shared their little demo with you here on JAGS. It was voted amongst the top 25 in the Last Gadget Standing, and was amongst my top two of show. But seeing a trade show demo, is never quite the same as DIY. So the nice people at DryCase sent me the small model to play with. When you play, you should play with children, so I enlisted the help of my nephew. Of course, it didn't hurt that he has a Kin, and I was far more willing to throw the Kin in a tub of water than my iPhone. They DryCase is as cool as it seemed from a distance, and I'm really...
