Review: Maps Plus – Google Maps replacement for iOS6

Rejoice! Yes, Apple has a few problems lately due to removing Google Maps and replacing them with their own (temporarily inferior) solution. However thanks to a 3rd party app that uses Google Maps service, you don't have to worry: Google Maps is back! While new Maps app from Apple has many advantages (vector drawing not based on images, very fast operation), it has serious problems with missing information. Here is a rather innocent example in Apple Maps where you can see that between street with name beginning with "H" there is nothing else: But on Google Maps one can clearly see another...

iPhone app review : Map Measure

This app is not unique - there are many many apps with which you can measure distance or area - but I like this one. I don't claim it's the best, it's simply the easiest to use for me. I must admit that I like this app a lot. I find it extremely useful and I will keep it long-term. While built-in Maps app of iOS has distance measurement via route calculation, I often want to know the distance in straight line or I would like to know the area of some place and then this app comes in handy. There are 2 kinds of things I use this app for: one is for some places near me, in vicinity - to know...

More Sygic Mobile Maps

Highway navigation Last week, I looked at Sygic Mobile Maps. Overall I found it quite useful for navigating around town. This week I had the opportunity to take it to the highway and check some very specific features. To begin my trip, I opened iPod and started some some random music playing. We then hit the road playing at a respectable volume for a car full of 50-60 somethings to hear. The opening song started quietly, and there was no question when "in 200 yards, turn left" was heard. Unfortunately, as the music got louder, it was in direct competition to "go to the left."...

Part I About ten years ago, the men in my life started showing up with various gps devices. I laughed. I scoffed. After all, who needed to know your latitude and longitude, or track where the fish were biting! And then one day, I discovered voiced enabled navigation, apologized to all for my scoffing, and jumped on the gps bandwagon. If you look in my junk drawer, you'll find at least three gps pucks. Fortunately, I haven't needed them with my last two phones, but they were essential when I first started getting unlost. I paid a small fortune for a huge gps puck to use with my Treo 650, and another...
