Review: Maps Plus – Google Maps replacement for iOS6

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  app, Google, iPad, iPhone, ipod, maps, review    Posted date:  November 10, 2012  |  No comment

Rejoice! Yes, Apple has a few problems lately due to removing Google Maps and replacing them with their own (temporarily inferior) solution. However thanks to a 3rd party app that uses Google Maps service, you don't have to worry: Google Maps is back! While new Maps app from Apple has many advantages (vector drawing not based on images, very fast operation), it has serious problems with missing information. Here is a rather innocent example in Apple Maps where you can see that between street with name beginning with "H" there is nothing else: But on Google Maps one can clearly see another...

FlyGrip – Smartphone accessory review

Posted by: Alli Flowers    Tags:  Android, cellphone, e-reader, Fly grip, holder, iPhone, ipod, Kindle, mobile, Nook, one-hand, smartphone    Posted date:  August 9, 2012  |  No comment

The FlyGrip is a great little gadget that makes holding your cellphone or e-reader more comfortable. Available in 8 colors and 3 sizes, it goes with everything and everyone. Simply take the adhesive backing off the FlyGrip, and attach to the bottom of your phone or e-reader. The FlyGrip pivots back and forth so that you can get your fingers under without pinching. The hard plastic is smooth and quite comfortable.     Mostly, it allows you to hold your device with one hand, and still access the entire screen. It's great for taking photos! If you wanted to, you could...

iPhone app review: My Fusion Tables

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  apps, fusion tables, Google, iOS, iPad, iPhone, ipod, review    Posted date:  June 26, 2012  |  No comment

Here I am reviewing an app for iPhone (and iPad, universal) written by DeuceSoft, a small company that makes it possible to browse data stored in Google's latest online app, Fusion Tables. What is Fusion Tables? It's difficult to describe just what Fusion Tables is. You have to see it for yourself. No, just kidding. Fusion Tables is more like a database than a spreadsheet. Unlike a spreadsheet, Fusion Tables is rather a kind-of cloud-based database where you can comfortably, via web interface, edit fields, edit data, and you can also visualize data in charts and on maps. In spreadsheets,...

Display Recorder – iOS App Review

Posted by: Alli Flowers    Tags:  apps, audio, capture, Display Recorder, iOS, iPad, iPhone, ipod, review, video    Posted date:  June 23, 2012  |  One Comment

Apple makes taking a simple screen capture so easy: just press the power and home buttons simultaneously, and you're done. But recording a video screen capture has proved to be more of a challenge. Sure, you can do it from the emulator, but until now the only way to do it from your iOS device was via a jailbreak. Not anymore! Display Recorder is finally available from iTunes for only $1.99. This app is of particular importance to developers as well as bloggers. How nice to be able to include app tutorials right on the developer's website - tutorials that can be made quickly and easily, with...

iPhone game review: Probe the Humans

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  aliens, apps, games, iOS, iPad, iPhone, ipod, review    Posted date:  June 23, 2012  |  No comment

While most people think that in December 2012 nothing will happen, some people think that the world will end, courtesy of a solar flare. Personally, I hope that aliens will come to Earth then. What can aliens do on planet Earth, considering how extremely primitive our homo sapiens species is? Well...aliens like to abduct for scientific purposes of course, although I suspect some fun may be involved too. Speaking of fun, Probe the Humans is a fun iPhone game where you are an alien abducting humans as well as livestock, like cows and pigs. You also ollect coins, which makes little sense in alien...

HD 4cast² – iOS App Review

Posted by: Alli Flowers    Tags:  apps, forecast, iOS, iPad, iPhone, ipod, meteorology, review, weather    Posted date:  June 11, 2012  |  One Comment

When you live in the rainiest city in the US, you can never have too many weather apps. I have quite a collection, but when I saw HD 4cast², I had to try it. It's beautiful, and it offers all the up to date information you could want when it comes to the weather that interests you. The main screen offers a stunning graphic portraying the current weather, with your location, the temperature, and the general description beneath. In the upper left hand corner, you see the wind speed and direction, and in the upper right you get weather warnings. At the bottom you get the five day forecast,...

ThingSling Accessory Review

Posted by: Alli Flowers    Tags:  accessories, cellphone, ipod, mobile phone, mp3 player, review, thingsling    Posted date:  May 29, 2012  |  No comment

What is the ThingSling? Just a clever little gizmo you stick to the back of whatever device you don't want to drop. In this photo to the left, you see it on my Kindle Touch, but you can stick it to a phone, iPod, mp3 player - just about anything. The ThingSling is made of a thick piece of elastic attached to a piece of hard plastic, that adheres to the back of your device. It's small, and doesn't add much bulk, so your gadget still fits in your purse or pocket even with the ThingSling attached. Here is the ThingSling story from Johnny Murphy: A little more than a year and half ago,...

CardMunch for iOS – App Review

Posted by: Alli Flowers    Tags:  apps, business cards, CardMunch, contacts, iOS, iPad, iPhone, ipod, LinkedIn, review, scanner    Posted date:  May 25, 2012  |  No comment

When you go to a meeting, trade show or conference, it's possible you will be given a mess of business cards. (That's a very technical term signifying quite a large stack.) And while we all spend a fortune having our business cards printed, we really don't want to keep hundreds that belong to other people. I was so pleased when Patrick from the Simulcast recommended CardMunch while we were at CTIA. CardMunch is different from some of the other business card scanners available in that it [is from] integrates with LinkedIn. The basic premise of CardMunch is that you use the app to take a photo...

Review – Energizer iSurge Travel Charging Station

Posted by: Alli Flowers    Tags:  accessories, charge, charging, Dock, Energizer, iPhone, ipod, outlets, plugs, review, USB    Posted date:  May 25, 2012  |  No comment

One of the things that constantly annoys me when I travel is the lack of outlets in hotel rooms, guest rooms, and barracks. Believe it or not, I carry 3 extension cords/surge protectors in the back of my car. But sometimes, they're just not enough. Sometimes you need something more...elegant. And that's where the Energizer iSurge Travel Charging Station comes in. It's lightweight and compact, easily fits in an overnight bag, and comes with all the bells and whistles. By bells and whistles, of course, I mean plugs and lights. Yes, the iSurge comes with a nightlight built in - extra awesome...

iHangy iPhone Lanyards

Posted by: Alli Flowers    Tags:  accessories, iHangy, iPhone, ipod, lanyard, stylus    Posted date:  May 5, 2012  |  One Comment

I have always loved keeping my phone on a lanyard. Maybe it's a girl thing, but even when I was on duty after Hurricane Ivan, I had my Treo on a lanyard...under my uniform jacket. It seemed a no brainer. But fewer and fewer phones come with a lanyard hook - which seems silly when almost all portable cameras still come with them, and smartphones cost more than the average point and shoot. Enter the iHangy. Funny name, but it couldn't be called anything else. And why not? Because it is for iPhones, and it lets them hang. Thus - iHangy. The iHangy comes in three flavors: original, crispy, and spicy....
