Review: Kumo Lumo – game for iPad and iPhone

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  apps, games, iOS, iPad, iPhone, review    Posted date:  May 12, 2013  |  No comment

Cloud storage and cloud computing are very hot topics nowadays in Information Technology industry. However I like also other kinds of clouds: those that bring rain. Yes, I am one of these people who likes cloudy, rainy regions like Seattle or London. That's why I also like this game - Kumo Lumo - a 2D arcade scroller where you play a character "Lumo" that is a cloud! Not really cloud computing related but a cloud! This is a freemium game - you can download and play it for free but you can buy items if you want to speed up gaming. It is also very mature and also supports joystick as control....

Review: newsblur – the Best Google Reader Replacement

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  app, Google reader, iOS, iPad, iPhone, newsblur, rss, web app    Posted date:  May 3, 2013  |  No comment

On July 1st, 2013, Google will “retire” Google Reader service. This news item has electrified many RSS lovers, developers, and startups, and there are now over 100 (sic!) RSS readers either already released or in development. It’s new gold rush, I tell ya! Many replacements of Google Reader are smartphone apps only, and some others are web apps only. Here I am presenting Newsblur, a replacement that is available both as a web app and a smartphone apps. Newsblur is free with some limitations (up to 64 RSS feeds, etc), but I have purchased the commercial version ($24 a year) to avoid those...

Case of the Week – Casemate Glam (review)

Posted by: Alli Flowers    Tags:  accessories, case, casemate, iOS, iPhone    Posted date:  April 20, 2013  |  No comment

I usually need at least a week to decide if I really like a case, but I fell in love with the Casemate Glam at first sight. But not for the reason you might think. Yes, it's sparkly. And what girl (or grown woman) doesn't like a little bling. As a matter of fact, I showed off this case to two girlfriends at dinner tonight, and they were both wowed. It is stunning - I can't deny it. But as I said, it wasn't the superficial that I fell in love with. When I pulled the Glam from the package, the back was facing away, and what I saw was the inside of the case. Spongey soft protection....

Review: Workflowy – the best outliner for web and iOS

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  apps, iOS, iPad, iPhone, lists, notes, outlines, review    Posted date:  March 31, 2013  |  No comment

While neither Google Docs nor Evernote are a full-featured outlining applications, it is possible to create outlines with them. However, outlines are better handled in specialised outliners. Recently David Winer, with Kyle Shank, formed LLC in Delaware and released their first product - web based outliner LittleOutliner (made with HTML5 technology). Although it's not bad, (has text formatting, no need to log-in), it is just a first effort (no sync between computers, saving just locally, no support for mobile devices). While I was looking at comments about this new hobby of David Winer, I noticed...

Review: AirPhones – app for streaming audio from PC/Mac to iPad/iPhone

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  airphone, apps, iOS, iPad, iPhone, mac, pc streaming, review, Windows    Posted date:  March 23, 2013  |  No comment

I am reviewing this app just because I love it. From time to time I would search for apps that would enable me to stream audio from my PC to my iPad, but all I could find were apps that played media (like video/audio files) remotely. What I needed, however, was playback of system sound - whatever it is at given moment - on my iPad. In other words I needed an app that would send any audio that is played on my PC to my iPad. And after a long search I have found it - it's called "AirPhones" - an iPhone app (that also works on iPad) and that requires server side on PC or Mac. You might think: why the heck...

ContactsXL for iPhone – Review

Posted by: Alli Flowers    Tags:  app, Apple, contacts, dialer, iOS, iPhone, phone, review    Posted date:  February 12, 2013  |  No comment

I recently snagged a promo code for ContactsXL, and was pleasantly surprised with what I'd gotten. One of the apps I missed most from the "good ole" Palm days, was a little something from Toysoft called Picture Dial. I loved Picture Dial (and not just because I had recommended it be developed in the first place). Highlighted by beautiful photos of your contacts that you could just tap to initiate a call to that person, I always considered this a must-have app. And it's something I've been missing a lot with iOS. ContactsXL makes up for as much of that functionality as can be made up within...

ZoomNotes App Review

Posted by: Alli Flowers    Tags:  apps, iOS, iPad, notes, stylus, ZoomNotes    Posted date:  February 2, 2013  |  No comment

I love using my iPad for taking notes. I started with Penultimate. It was..ok. It's obvious to me that the people who believe that Penultimate is anything other than penultimate, have never tried any other note taking apps. I quickly left Penultimate when I discovered Notability and CaptureNotes 2. I've gone back and forth between those two for the last year - they each have completely different strengths, so it's been a tough call. Now I've met ZoomNotes, and it was love at first sight. This app is a beast! If you can think of a feature you would want in a notes app, (like the commercial says),...

iPhone joystick review: iCade Jr from ION

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  Android, capacitive screen, controllers, games, gaming, iOS, touch screen    Posted date:  February 2, 2013  |  No comment

Steve Jobs was stubborn about many things, e.g. stylus or pen for touchscreen devices,  just because the Apple Newton device had a stylus and was developed during his absence from Apple. Steve Jobs utterly hated stylus or pen for devices. The same with joysticks: he thought that touchscreens are enough to do everything including mobile gaming. But hard core gamers who use consoles (Sony Playstation, Microsoft XBox) or mobile gamers who use Nintendo DS or Sony Playstation Vita will understand: touchscreens never ever can replace regular joystick or game controllers (that is until some tactile...

First Microsoft Game For iOS – Tentacles: Enter the Dolphin – Review

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  games, iOS, iPad, iPhone, Microsoft, review    Posted date:  January 19, 2013  |  No comment

Kinectimals for iOS is rather an sidekick-app to a videogame for Kinect, so first real game-game videogame from Microsoft is Tentacles: enter the dolphin! First when I learned about it that Microsoft is making now video games for iPhone and iPad, I thought "seriously? what about supporting Windows Phone first?". However after researching a bit I have learned that this game was actually released first for Windows Phone by a Denmark-located small company "press play" and now re-made for iOS (universal) but published by Microsoft as visible above in a splash screen. So the story goes...

iPad mini or Kindle Paperwhite?

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  e-ink, eboo, eink, iOS, iPad, iPad mini, Kindle, Kindle Paper White    Posted date:  January 13, 2013  |  No comment

Personally, I own both: an iPad mini LTE and the Kindle Paperwhite, and they both have changed everything. The iPad mini has brought many iPad-only apps to portable iPad that fits in jacket pocket and the Kindle Paperwhite is finally the first Kindle that can be read in darkness, e.g. in bed at night. However, the question that many people ask themselves is: should I buy the Kindle Paperwhite or a small tablet like the iPad mini? First let me dismiss the question of Windows 8 tablets: there are 2 variants (RT with ARM processor that can't run old Windows programs, and those with x86 processor...
