The Palm newness. All the specs are here on Engadget.

I still love Palm, and I'm a Sprint customer. I will be getting one as soon as they go on sale. But I'm not totally convinced.

Have they indicated which carriers will have it?  And an ETA?

Alli as soon as I saw this you were the first person that came to mind.  Let's hope this will be a flagship for Palm and Sprint to get these companies going strong again.

I do believe I'll need a birthday gift right around that time.   Cool

And here I've been tryin' to think of ways I can swap my Pink Centro for the Olive green with more memory...maybe I'll hold off yet.

Alright.
I'm officially Hped.

This is from Treo Central.
And this is from Engadget.
Naturally I'll be getting one as my store's advocate.
I haven't been this excited about a phone since my 650 days.
I gotta go to the john.

Until someone can do a much better job of explaining webOS, guarantee that there will be an expansion slot, and further guarantee that all apps (?!) and data will be available without service (ie in a non coverage area), I am not excited. This is closer to Android than Palm.

My fandom was always with the Palm os, not the label.

Although you get 8 GB of memory to play with, there is no memory card slot to add more. There’s also no video capture, and no Flash or 3D support. The Bluetooth profiles are also limited to audio - there’s no OBEX, for example.

The keyboard is reminiscent of the Centro or Treo Pro, but closer to the Pro in that the keys are spread out and somewhat larger.

On a more positive note any web developer can build an app for the phone, but there are limitations. 3D gaming, for instance, won’t be possible, at least with version 1.0 of the OS — though Palm might add a different, more powerful display layer in the future. Palm has confirmed that there will be an app store and an SDK which will be available to anyone.

The device features copy and paste, which is implemented by holding a thumb on the gesture area and grabbing the text you want with your other thumb or a finger, there’s also a drop down menu that lets you move through a number of editing options.

Old Palm OS applications won’t work on Web OS directly, but Palm did say that a third party developer is working on an emulator to enable such compatibility

Aside from my initial excitement, those are my concerns as well, and I'm eager to hear them addressed.  I know if anyone will ferret out answers, Alli will.

I've already been told by a number of people that I'm a hater and that moving to WM has made me give up on Palm. I was, of course, quick to explain that my WM device is a Palm. Palm os as we know it (and love it) is dead. RIP. I will miss it. I think I said before, I was really hoping for an upgrade to the old os, not a knife to its heart and an heir to the throne.

If we did not accept change we'd still be using the telegraph. I went with WM because of what it offered over Palm OS. Plus the phone! Like Alli I'll miss PalmOS but I'll heartily embrace this new one. If it improves my interaction with my phone I'm all for it.

Bug 8GB is nowhere near enough if there is no sd card. I'd have to wait for the 2nd gen Pre. The 8GB sd card that I used first on my Centro and currently on my 800w is almost full, and all my apps are on the device! I can't imagine needing that many fewer apps, or (doh!) slimming down my pim data for a smaller device.

I wish Palm and Sprint the best. I just know if this device is enough.

Well I just read that
the phone will not run old Palm OS natively.
BUT they do expect an emulator...

So I'm thinking this is a very sound financial move on their part,
allowing them to concentrate on their here and now.
If they are to compete effectively,
they have to move forward and not look back.
(That last sentence btw is a variation of so many freakin' clichés.) Cheesy

I do expect an emulator to be one of the first apps some
third party developer will create.
