Review: iOS OTA update – another reason why iOS is the best mobile OS!

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  5.0.1, Apple, iOS, iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, OTA, update    Posted date:  November 10, 2011  |  One Comment

If you have an Android phone or tablet, then you may never get the latest version of Android operating system because Android is fragmented like crazy. If you have Windows Phone 7 point something then sure, you are getting new updates but they are coming in waves, so some users must wait months to get the latest update or must use tricks (like disconnecting Internet while Zune software on Windows 7 PC checks for update). However, if you have an iOS device - not only are you getting the latest update for rather old devices (latest iOS 5 is available even for 3 years old iPhone 3GS and for 2 years...

WorldCard Mobile – business card reader/scanner app

Posted by: Alli Flowers    Tags:  apps, business cards, contact management, contacts, iOS, iPad, iPhone, OCR    Posted date:  November 5, 2011  |  No comment

WorldCard Mobile is the next entry into a category filled with apps. If you enter "business card reader" into the iTunes search bar, you'll find dozens of possibilities. So what sets WorldCard Mobile apart from the competitors? Let's take a look at the options. Unlike most of the competitors, WorldCard Mobile gives you more than one option of adding contacts. Most similar apps will have you take a picture of a business card, and then use OCR to recognize the contact information, which you can then save directly to your contacts. Of course, WorldCard Mobile can do that. Character recognition...

Nokia Lumia 800 review

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  HTC, Lumia, Mango, Nokia, Samsung, Windows Phone    Posted date:  November 2, 2011  |  No comment

Nokia is currently still the biggest cellphone vendor in the world, considering units sold and including non-smartphones like their S40 feature phones that are popular in India and South America (revenue-wise Samsung and Apple are bigger thanks to fat margins in smartphone area) And after the failure of their own operating systems (Symbian, Meego) Nokia decided to switch to Windows Phone from Microsoft. A Nokia phone powered by Windows Phone? Really? Yes, really, dude: In the middle of November 2011 in Europe and in 2012 in USA the first Nokia smartphones powered by Windows Phone are going...

Book review: Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  Apple, book review, Steve Jobs    Posted date:  October 30, 2011  |  No comment

Previously I have reviewed here on this very blog an important book about video gaming (crazy lady there postulates that soon people will be getting Nobel Prize for video games) and now I am reviewing the most important book for geeks ever: Steve Jobs autobiography by Walter Isaacson. Importance This is the only authorized autobiography of Steve Jobs where the author (Walter Isaacson) was able to get Steve Jobs' opinions on many topics. Since Steve Jobs has died there will be no other authorized biography about him. This book is unique. This book is not merely for people interested in Steve...

iPhone app review: Worldictionary by Penpower – OCR and translation

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  app review, dictionary, iPhone, translation    Posted date:  October 29, 2011  |  No comment

If you are traveling or you have contact with someone who speaks another language, you might sometimes need a translation - but you don't have time to type it out. With help of  Worlddictionary for iPhone by Penpower you can quickly get things translated just by pointing your iPhone camera towards the text you want translated. Real-time translation works for individual words by hovering over the needed word and get translation immediately. Unfortunately when it comes to big text with little contrast I couldn't get it recognized no matter how sharp I had it. This is not that...

An Alarm Clock that Works!

Posted by: Alli Flowers    Tags:      Posted date:  October 22, 2011  |  No comment

One of my long time frustrations since adopting the iPhone was the crappy alarm clock. Sure, you can set an unlimited number of alarms, but you are stuck with either a limited number of truly abysmal sounds to wake up to, or the custom ringtones you've added. I don't know about you, but my ringtones are meant to jolt me from whatever I'm doing, and I prefer to be woken gently. What I wanted was the ability I always had on my Palm devices to use my music collection to wake me the way I wanted. Recently I came across ALmu/Holiday Alarm, which for only $1.99 does everything I want from an alarm...

iMessage review

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  iMessage, iMessage app, iMessage review, sms, text message, WhatsApp    Posted date:  October 20, 2011  |  No comment

Here comes yet another reason why you should also buy an iPhone if you already have an iPad, or an iPad if you already have an iPhone: iMessage - which I am reviewing here. iMessage is not multi-platform like WhatsApp (and many other such messaging apps) but it is better integrated with Apple services and offers additional goodies so it's worth using. The general idea of iMessage is why should you pay fees for text messages (also known as "SMS") if you already pay for flat rate mobile Internet? No reason. No reason at all. And besides: you can also use it without a cellular network connection...

iCloud review

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  Apple, cloud, Find my friends, Find my phone, iCloud, itunes    Posted date:  October 15, 2011  |  One Comment

Apple officially launched iCloud merely few days ago, so we are in the early days of this new revolutionary development. While this comes together with iOS5 it will probably shape the future of Apple products, just as iTunes did. Yes, iCloud is a major technological breakthrough by Apple - on the scale of iTunes. So what is iCloud? iCloud is not just storage (5GB free, more storage available for purchase if desired), but also complex synchronization, backup, and geolocation system. One interesting thing is that you cannot setup iCloud simply by going to iCloud.com, but you must setup iCloud...

Windows Phone mango ( 7.5 ) review

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  Mango, Microsoft, Nokia, windows phone 7.5, windows phone mango    Posted date:  October 1, 2011  |  4 Comments

For the first time, Windows Phone can compete with Android and become a true smartphone (previously it was merely a lame feature phone) with Windows Phone Mango. Previously I have reviewed pre-mango Windows Phone 7 and now I am reviewing Mango itself! Mango is Windows Phone 7.5 where OS version is 7.10 to make things even more confusing (when developing apps for Mango developers must choose "7.10" and pre-Mango 7.0): The Mango update came to users via Zune software running on PC - such clone of iTunes - and users who didn't get it (because it was rolled out in waves) could enforce installation...

ROOCASE Executive Leather Case for the Nook Color

Posted by: Diana M. McDonough    Tags:  accessories, Android, cases, e-reader, Nook    Posted date:  September 29, 2011  |  No comment

I recently purchased the ROOCASE Executive Leather case for my Nook Color as a consolation prize for not being able to get a new tablet.  The case is available in red, magenta, graphite grey and black.  I bought the red one. The leather is nice quality; it is not smooth, yet not too heavily grained for my overly-sensitive fingers.  The case itself is fairly thick at just over an inch, but that is understandable given the design.  The cover is sturdy and rigid; and it is nicely padded, with the ROOCASE logo embossed in the lower right corner of the front.  The Nook could probably withstand...
