Posted by: Edward    Tags:  Apple, apps, iOS, iPad, iPhone, mac, mactracker, OS X, review    Posted date:  February 21, 2012  |  No comment

Initially I thought that this app is only about Mac computers but no, it's about iOS devices and in fact, about all devices and (some) software of Apple too! (more...)

TouchT – iPad Game Review

Posted by: Alli Flowers    Tags:  games, iPad, tetris    Posted date:  February 20, 2012  |  No comment

TouchT is a Tetris-like game for iPad. The game basics are familiar enough to anyone who has ever played Tetris, or any of the other games based on Tetris. Colored shapes fall, and you try to fit them together to form a solid wall. Of course, TouchT is not Tetris, so game play is a little different, and actually more complex (although in same cases, easier!). Your blocks fall to the sides, alternating left/right. Although the speed can become so intense you won't notice whether you are moving to the left or still on the right, and it doesn't really matter which you chose, as long as you get the piece...

Digital Innovations Android Speaker Dock

Posted by: Diana M. McDonough    Tags:  accessories, Android, app, Dock, speakers    Posted date:  February 20, 2012  |  No comment

With the plethora of speakers and docks available for iPad and iPhone, it was nice to see someone come out with one specifically for Android, and I was thrilled to get my hands on this one from Digital Innovations. At 12” wide and 3” deep, this dock is a little larger than I expected, but still small enough to fit comfortably on a desk…or on my nightstand, which is where mine will sit. It has 2 front speakers (right and left) and one speaker on the rear. The sound is fantastic! There is also a small blue LED power indicator light on the front.       The...

Porkchop and Mouse: a children’s ebook app

Posted by: Alli Flowers    Tags:  children, ebook, iBook, illustrated, iOS, iPad, iPhone, story    Posted date:  January 24, 2012  |  No comment

Before last week's Apple event introducing iBooks 2, there were interactive books for children that were apps. We have reviewed several here on Justanothergeeksite. Today we are looking at Porkchop and Mouse by Fiona Roberton. Porkchop and Mouse is a delightful story with beautiful pictures. You (or your child) can turn the pages forwards or backwards to move through the story just like a paper bound book. The story moves you through Porchop's hunt for the poor mouse who took up residency in his house. They go through a range of beautifully illustrated landscapes before landing back at home....

Review: iBooks 2 with Textbooks and interactive eBooks

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  ebook, ebooks    Posted date:  January 21, 2012  |  2 Comments

The rumor is that before he died, Steve Jobs dreamed of bringing textbooks to iPad. He actually saw iPad as a tool for kids (which also explains the lack of porn apps for iPad). However, the latest announcement related to eBooks may be also seen simply as another inventive way for Apple to boost sales of their hardware (iPad and Mac) and to earn even more as middleman selling content (eBooks). It also can be seen as a way to prevent the avalanche of "books published as apps" that pollute iOS app store and make finding apps of interest obfuscated by stupid "books published as apps". So, the big Apple...

A Trio of Android Treasures

Like many people, I am forever hunting for applications which extend the functionality of my device, and increase its abilities. Without bursting into song about my favorite things, here are three Android applications that make my life easier, and my device much more useful. Tasker – Android Automation Gone Wild (~5.50 purchased from dev, ~6.50 purchased through market) Tasker has been around a while, and much has been said about it, but I think it worth mentioning again.  This gem of an app allows the user to automate almost anything on the device – without root, and without being an Android...

7 Jours Sur La Planète: How to Improve your French

Posted by: Alli Flowers    Tags:  app, Apple, French, iPad, iPhone, language learning    Posted date:  December 18, 2011  |  No comment

When you study languages in school, a popular method is through "thematic units." With this method, we pick a theme, and then study vocabulary and culture that fit within the theme. This can be particularly challenging at the intermediate levels, where students have the basic skills, but need to build their vocabulary. Using the app "7 Jours" can build on existing skills, improve vocabulary skills, and keep students "au courant" while having fun. Both vocabulary and listening skills are emphasized by using short news stories. Depending on your preference, you can begin by simply...

Hagar the Harfowl: a Children’s iPad Book

Posted by: Alli Flowers    Tags:  Apple, book, children, ebook, iPad, reading, story    Posted date:  December 17, 2011  |  One Comment

The iPad has opened a whole new world of entertainment for children. But entertainment shouldn't be restricted to games. It's a well known fact that children whose parents read to them are far more likely to succeed in school, than those who miss out on this early boost. Additionally, children who are exposed to reading, begin to read on their own at an earlier age than those who are not read to. Obviously the best of all possible worlds is a children's book on an iPad. Most children still view the iPad as a toy - a way to play games. What's wrong with them thinking that reading a book is a game?...

Review: Flipboard for iPhone

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  aggregator, app review, flipboard, news, rss    Posted date:  December 10, 2011  |  No comment

There are plenty of RSS readers in both smartphone app and web-app form, so it's amazing that companies constantly come up with ideas how to present a stream of stories and content in attractive ways. Here comes Flipboard - previously available only on the iPad - and now also released for iPhone! Flipboard is free and it aggregates articles from websites. While the iPad version of this app flips from right to left, the iPhone version flips from top to bottom. You can use this app account-less or you can sign-in via a Flipboard account. You can also sign in via Twitter or Facebook. Here...

Cookies for Christmas – iPhone App Review

Posted by: Alli Flowers    Tags:  app, Apple, baking, Christmas, cookies, cooking, holidays, iPhone, recipes    Posted date:  December 4, 2011  |  No comment

It's that time of year, and how better to help you make all your holiday cookie needs than an iPhone app? My first thought, of course, is with an iPad app. And that's the one thing wrong with this app - it's not a universal binary, so to use your iPad in the kitchen, you'll have to supersize it. Let's look at the basics of the app, which is quite nice, albeit somewhat limited. (Then again, while cookies is a broad category, cookies for Christmas is, in itself, limiting.) The main screen contains categories of recipes. You can choose which way you view or search them. Once you have found recipes...
