Review: Kumo Lumo – game for iPad and iPhone

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  apps, games, iOS, iPad, iPhone, review    Posted date:  May 12, 2013  |  No comment

May 12, 2013

Cloud storage and cloud computing are very hot topics nowadays in Information Technology industry. However I like also other kinds of clouds: those that bring rain. Yes, I am one of these people who likes cloudy, rainy regions like Seattle or London. That's why I also like this game - Kumo Lumo - a 2D arcade scroller where you play a character "Lumo" that is a cloud! Not really cloud computing related but a cloud! This is a freemium game - you can download and play it for free but you can buy items if you want to speed up gaming. It is also very mature and also supports joystick as control....

Review: newsblur – the Best Google Reader Replacement

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  app, Google reader, iOS, iPad, iPhone, newsblur, rss, web app    Posted date:  May 3, 2013  |  No comment

May 3, 2013

On July 1st, 2013, Google will “retire” Google Reader service. This news item has electrified many RSS lovers, developers, and startups, and there are now over 100 (sic!) RSS readers either already released or in development. It’s new gold rush, I tell ya! Many replacements of Google Reader are smartphone apps only, and some others are web apps only. Here I am presenting Newsblur, a replacement that is available both as a web app and a smartphone apps. Newsblur is free with some limitations (up to 64 RSS feeds, etc), but I have purchased the commercial version ($24 a year) to avoid those...

Apple AirPort – review

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  airport express, Apple, router, wifi, wireless    Posted date:  April 20, 2013  |  No comment

April 20, 2013

I have very good wireless router from NetGear (with 7 antennas and MIMO technology) at home and I don't need to replace it. Why would I want to buy Airport router from Apple at all? Two reasons: 1. AirPort Express (the smaller AirPort) has built-in audio output (that AirPort Extreme doesn't have). 2. Some apps for iOS can use Apple networking technology, Bonjour over Internet, (not just at home/office), only if the router supports it. So even though I actually didn't need a new wireless router, I bought it! One surprising thing is the size of AirPort Express - it's of similar size to Apple...

Review: Workflowy – the best outliner for web and iOS

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  apps, iOS, iPad, iPhone, lists, notes, outlines, review    Posted date:  March 31, 2013  |  No comment

March 31, 2013

While neither Google Docs nor Evernote are a full-featured outlining applications, it is possible to create outlines with them. However, outlines are better handled in specialised outliners. Recently David Winer, with Kyle Shank, formed LLC in Delaware and released their first product - web based outliner LittleOutliner (made with HTML5 technology). Although it's not bad, (has text formatting, no need to log-in), it is just a first effort (no sync between computers, saving just locally, no support for mobile devices). While I was looking at comments about this new hobby of David Winer, I noticed...

Review: AirPhones – app for streaming audio from PC/Mac to iPad/iPhone

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  airphone, apps, iOS, iPad, iPhone, mac, pc streaming, review, Windows    Posted date:  March 23, 2013  |  No comment

March 23, 2013

I am reviewing this app just because I love it. From time to time I would search for apps that would enable me to stream audio from my PC to my iPad, but all I could find were apps that played media (like video/audio files) remotely. What I needed, however, was playback of system sound - whatever it is at given moment - on my iPad. In other words I needed an app that would send any audio that is played on my PC to my iPad. And after a long search I have found it - it's called "AirPhones" - an iPhone app (that also works on iPad) and that requires server side on PC or Mac. You might think: why the heck...

Review: Tinderizer – how to read web pages offline on Kindle

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  Amazon, e-reader, ebook, eink, Kindle, PDF, review, Tinderizer    Posted date:  March 9, 2013  |  No comment

March 9, 2013

My iPad mini with LTE is still my most favorite gadget, but it has 2 disadvantages: it is (still) a little too big to carry in 1 hand while walking on streets, and it still doesn't have retina display. So it is not as healthy for eyes as eInk based eBook readers. On the other hand, there is no doubt that Amazon makes the best eInk readers, Kindle Paperwhite being the best one, notably because it has built-in light in display. That is, however, not back-lit display but uses special technology to shine light towards the display from one layer above the eInk. I wanted to be able to read web pages...

Review: Windows 8 for iPad

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  app, Apple, emulate, iPad, mac, Microsoft, OS X, PC, streaming, Windows 8    Posted date:  March 2, 2013  |  No comment

March 2, 2013

Yes, Windows 8 works on iPad, including multi touch gestures. After getting the app (see link at the end of this review) and after installing streamer software on Windows 8, your iPad discovers Windows 8 and you can start. Of course, you need to enter secret security code to start. Here is the control bar and how it works. While mostly you will use the on–screen keyboard of Windows 8 for text entry, sometimes you will prefer the iOS-side keyboard. What you get is full Windows 8 touch experience, including multi touch and various edge gestures. You can also try the Windows...

Sprinkle game for iOS and Android – review

Posted by: Edward    Tags:  Android, Apple, game, iPhone, review    Posted date:  February 13, 2013  |  No comment

February 13, 2013

This game for iOS and Android is special because it realistically simulates the way water works. The purpose of this game is to play fireman by directing water flow from a water canon towards fires: you can adjust the height and angle from which you sprinkle water towards fire. This game is very addictive because the flow of water feels real and because the puzzles to solve are fun. Disclaimer: I liked this game before learning that it was made by 2 Swedish guys from Sweden (and I am very biased as Sweden is one of my 3 most favorite countries in Europe - for me "Made in Sweden" is equivalent...

Vine app review

February 12, 2013

Every time this happens again I feel Schadenfreude: some new hot app is being released but at first only for iPhone (and since iPad can run iPhone apps in compatibility mode: also for iPad). This time it is Vine - now still not available for Android and Windows Phone. What is Vine? It's basically speaking animated GIF with sound, a short (up to 6 seconds) video that can be uploaded via Vine app for iPhone. What is special about Vine is that it has blessing of Twitter, i.e. it's built-in into official Twitter app for iOS. Also Tweetbot can play Vine tweets. However you can post...

iPhone joystick review: iCade Jr from ION

February 2, 2013

Steve Jobs was stubborn about many things, e.g. stylus or pen for touchscreen devices,  just because the Apple Newton device had a stylus and was developed during his absence from Apple. Steve Jobs utterly hated stylus or pen for devices. The same with joysticks: he thought that touchscreens are enough to do everything including mobile gaming. But hard core gamers who use consoles (Sony Playstation, Microsoft XBox) or mobile gamers who use Nintendo DS or Sony Playstation Vita will understand: touchscreens never ever can replace regular joystick or game controllers (that is until some tactile...
