The Nest for any Tablet

November 12, 2011

While surfing for new and possibly interesting accessories, I came across bluelounge.com. They are positively packed with novelties. I couldn't help but place an order. The focus of my order was something called the Nest. The Nest holds any tablet in two positions: raised at a slight angle, and almost perpendicular.   I must admit, I was mostly captured by this little gadget because of the variety of colors available. I ordered a pink one. So far, I have not been disappointed, and am already considering getting a second one so that I can keep one on my desk at school, and one on my night...

LapGuard with Radiation Shielding Technology

Posted by: Alli Flowers    Tags:  DigitalInnovations, fans, lapguard, laptop, PC, radiation, shielding    Posted date:  November 12, 2011  |  2 Comments

November 12, 2011

I was recently given the opportunity to look at a new product from DigitalInnovations - LapGuard with Radiation Shielding Technology. What really sets LapGuard apart from standard lap desks, though, is its grounded metal plate, which, besides conducting laptop heat away from the user’s legs, is specially designed to reflect Wi-Fi radiation away from the sensitive reproductive area." DigitalInnovations has two versions, the wedge-shaped "LapGuard," and the skinny "Portable LapGuard." The wedge-shaped model measures about 15.5" diagonally and the portable model measures just over 16" diagonally....

WorldCard Mobile – business card reader/scanner app

Posted by: Alli Flowers    Tags:  apps, business cards, contact management, contacts, iOS, iPad, iPhone, OCR    Posted date:  November 5, 2011  |  No comment

November 5, 2011

WorldCard Mobile is the next entry into a category filled with apps. If you enter "business card reader" into the iTunes search bar, you'll find dozens of possibilities. So what sets WorldCard Mobile apart from the competitors? Let's take a look at the options. Unlike most of the competitors, WorldCard Mobile gives you more than one option of adding contacts. Most similar apps will have you take a picture of a business card, and then use OCR to recognize the contact information, which you can then save directly to your contacts. Of course, WorldCard Mobile can do that. Character recognition...

An Alarm Clock that Works!

Posted by: Alli Flowers    Tags:      Posted date:  October 22, 2011  |  No comment

October 22, 2011

One of my long time frustrations since adopting the iPhone was the crappy alarm clock. Sure, you can set an unlimited number of alarms, but you are stuck with either a limited number of truly abysmal sounds to wake up to, or the custom ringtones you've added. I don't know about you, but my ringtones are meant to jolt me from whatever I'm doing, and I prefer to be woken gently. What I wanted was the ability I always had on my Palm devices to use my music collection to wake me the way I wanted. Recently I came across ALmu/Holiday Alarm, which for only $1.99 does everything I want from an alarm...

Chopsticks Culture

Posted by: Alli Flowers    Tags:  app, audio, Chinese, cuisine, education, food, iOS, iPhone, language    Posted date:  September 17, 2011  |  Comment

September 17, 2011

Chopsticks Culture is a new educational iPhone app. Its focus is Chinese cuisine, and the language that surrounds it. The concept is great: photos of authentic dishes, and their names in both Mandarin and Cantonese. You get a transliteration, the Chinese spelling, and audio. Of course, you also get photos of each dish along with its name. There are four categories, entrée, drinks, main, and dessert. Inside each category, you find a variety of subcategories. You learn to recognize dishes that you may not typically see in Chinese restaurants in North America, learn to recognize the name,...
