7 Jours Sur La Planète: How to Improve your French

Posted by: Alli Flowers    Tags:  app, Apple, French, iPad, iPhone, language learning    Posted date:  December 18, 2011  |  No comment

December 18, 2011

When you study languages in school, a popular method is through "thematic units." With this method, we pick a theme, and then study vocabulary and culture that fit within the theme. This can be particularly challenging at the intermediate levels, where students have the basic skills, but need to build their vocabulary. Using the app "7 Jours" can build on existing skills, improve vocabulary skills, and keep students "au courant" while having fun. Both vocabulary and listening skills are emphasized by using short news stories. Depending on your preference, you can begin by simply...

Hagar the Harfowl: a Children’s iPad Book

December 17, 2011

The iPad has opened a whole new world of entertainment for children. But entertainment shouldn't be restricted to games. It's a well known fact that children whose parents read to them are far more likely to succeed in school, than those who miss out on this early boost. Additionally, children who are exposed to reading, begin to read on their own at an earlier age than those who are not read to. Obviously the best of all possible worlds is a children's book on an iPad. Most children still view the iPad as a toy - a way to play games. What's wrong with them thinking that reading a book is a game?...

December 10, 2011

Finding a spot for your phone in your car can be a challenge. You want it nearby, but you don't want to have to keep grabbing for it. (And you know you shouldn't be using it while driving in the first place.) Of course, if you're using gps, it's even more important to be able to keep it in view, and close enough to hear easily. And a power source would be nice, right? Enter the Cobra Universal Cigarette Lighter Mount. One word of caution, check the location of your cigarette lighter power inputs before looking at this type of mount. Placement is important. My last car was a Toyota Camry, where...

Cookies for Christmas – iPhone App Review

December 4, 2011

It's that time of year, and how better to help you make all your holiday cookie needs than an iPhone app? My first thought, of course, is with an iPad app. And that's the one thing wrong with this app - it's not a universal binary, so to use your iPad in the kitchen, you'll have to supersize it. Let's look at the basics of the app, which is quite nice, albeit somewhat limited. (Then again, while cookies is a broad category, cookies for Christmas is, in itself, limiting.) The main screen contains categories of recipes. You can choose which way you view or search them. Once you have found recipes...

December 3, 2011

I kept seeing people in forums talk about the LifeProof case, and how much better it was than the Otterbox. What I hadn't seen, was a decent review on the LifeProof case. Hopefully, I'll be able to answer all the questions for you right now. I'm going to start with the obligatory comparison to the Otterbox. As most of us know, the two best known Otterbox cases are the Defender and the Commuter. The Defender is BIG. It makes your slender iPhone bulky. It never occurred to me to use one just for this reason. The Commuter, on the other hand, does not add considerable bulk, and with the available...
