Way back in episode 33, I talked about Microsoft Tag on the Convertcast in 2010. A lot has changed since then, and barcode scanning has become ubiquitous in both e-commerce and brick and mortar stores. What we have not seen more of, however, is Microsoft Tag. Microsoft is now making an attempt to bring it back by using it as the method of entry in a contest hosted by Newegg.

I dutifully downloaded Tag to my iPhone, an app I hadn’t got much use from, and didn’t even have installed anymore. Is it worth installing just to enter a contest? Sure – why not?!

Play the Golden Egg Games Using Mobile Barcodes and Gaming Applications to Win Instant Prizes and Discounts

City of Industry, CA — June 12, 2012 — Newegg Inc., the leading electronics-focused e-retailer in the United States, today announced it has selected technology from Microsoft and L4 Mobile to execute the launch of a new mobile game promotion for consumers, the Golden Egg Games. Through the program, Newegg customers can use their mobile phones to win instant prizes and discounts, including the chance to win an Xbox 360 Kinect bundle. The promotion is powered by the L4 Mobile contest and sweepstakes management platform, Interplay™, which is integrated with the Microsoft Tag platform.

Developed by L4 Mobile, Newegg’s Golden Egg Games can be accessed by simply scanning custom designated Microsoft Tag 2D barcodes that can be found on printed promotional materials, as well as Newegg’s website: www.newegg.com/goldenegg. Playing the Golden Egg Games gives consumers the opportunity to instantly win a Newegg t-shirt or $10 off their next purchase on Newegg.com. Some players will also be able to enter a sweepstakes for a chance to win a grand prize of an Xbox 360 Kinect bundle and a $500 Newegg promotional gift card, a prize package valued at nearly $800. Consumers can increase their chances of winning by playing the Golden Egg Games once a day for the duration of the program.

“As an innovative player in the online retail space, Newegg is always looking for new, creative ways to engage and connect with our customers,” said Tommy Chang, director of marketing at Newegg. “By leveraging the advancements of cutting-edge mobile technology, the Golden Egg Games allows us to interact with our customers in a unique and fun way while rewarding them with prizes and discounts.”
