Display Recorder – iOS App Review

Apple makes taking a simple screen capture so easy: just press the power and home buttons simultaneously, and you’re done. But recording a video screen capture has proved to be more of a challenge. Sure, you can do it from the emulator, but until now the only way to do it from your iOS device was via a jailbreak.

Not anymore! Display Recorder is finally available from iTunes for only $1.99. This app is of particular importance to developers as well as bloggers. How nice to be able to include app tutorials right on the developer’s website – tutorials that can be made quickly and easily, with little fuss or editing. What a tremendous addition to a FAQ!

Video bloggers have pretty much been restricted to accessory reviews…until now. Display Recorder should open up a whole new world of possibilities.

A very simple app, it opens with a simple screen where you can start recording.

Pressing the red “record” button starts a video capture of everything that happens on your screen from that point. You will see a red bar appear at the top of your screen, reminding you that you are recording. This should help prevent you from entering passwords for the world to see. Of course, if you need to enter a password, you can either edit it out later, or simply return to the Video Recorder screen, pause the video, go back to your app and enter your password, and then resume recording.

Settings are minimal, and include things like Duration, Video Quality and Size, and some Audio settings.

As I point out in the video below, the only real negative with Display Recorder is that you lose the ability to record audio with your video if the app you’re viewing happens to do audio. But this is to be expected. You’re usually better off going back and overdubbing your audio anyway.

I’m very excited to finally have this ability. The video below was recorded on my iPad.
