I was recently given the opportunity to look at a new product from DigitalInnovations – LapGuard with Radiation Shielding Technology.

What really sets LapGuard apart from standard lap desks, though, is its grounded metal plate, which, besides conducting laptop heat away from the user’s legs, is specially designed to reflect Wi-Fi radiation away from the sensitive reproductive area.”

DigitalInnovations has two versions, the wedge-shaped “LapGuard,” and the skinny “Portable LapGuard.” The wedge-shaped model measures about 15.5″ diagonally and the portable model measures just over 16″ diagonally. While it is obvious a 13 or 15″ laptop will fit on these LapGuards, I had no problem using my 17″ HP laptop comfortably.

Both LapGuards are extremely lightweight. The wedge-shaped version weighs 2.12 lbs, and the skinny one weighs 1.96 lbs. The skinny version will fit easily in a laptop bag with your computer.

What makes both models interesting, is that despite the light weight, there are fans built in. So not only does the LapGuard keep your lap cool by simply coming between you and your computer, but it keeps the laptop cool by circulating air from beneath.

The fans are powered by usb. The skinny model has a recessed spot to wind up the cord when not in use. The cord, itself, is just long enough to reach from the LapGuard to the usb port of your laptop – even a 17″ laptop.

The wedge model has a retractable usb cord (very convenient!). It also has a dial on the side for adjusting the speed of the fans.

Both have a small lip on top to prevent your laptop from sliding, although you are pretty much dependent on weight when using the 17″laptop.

The bottom of both is covered with a fabric, but does not offer any cushion. The wedge model offers cushion in the wedge only. I prefer the wedge model, as it offers a slight incline when sitting on your lap.

While my reproductive healthy is not exactly a priority, having a laptop burning my legs is definitely something I worry about when using a pc. Both can be purchased from DigitalInnovations, with the skinny version listed at $39.99, and the wedge version at $49.99.

A very nice review of this lap shield, Alli. Well-written and informative. I wonder, though, just how many people still use laptop computers on their laps.

In my case the expansion of belly has greatly reduced the effectively available lap space, and I find a smartphone and/or a tablet computer to be much more ergonomically friendly in those situations where I don’t have a desk or table to use. Come to think of it, I really don’t know when was the last time I actually saw anyone use a laptop on his (or her) lap.

I actually always use my laptop on my lap. I no longer have a desk at home. But people who use laptops as portable devices, rather than desktop replacements, use their laps. At least that’s the way it seems to me when I’m at the airport.
