Kioky – The Rise and Fall

About a year ago, I discovered Kickstarter. Ok, so I didn’t exactly discover it in the way Columbus discovered America, but it was new to me. And the reason I came across it was because of a startup company called Kioky. Strange name. You can read all about their Kickstarter program here, but they’re pas that now, and into production. I thought their product sounded pretty ingenious – a frame to hold a screen protector, so that all you had to do was drop your phone in, screen first, and everything would line up. Those of you who have followed me for a while, know that this is the very thing I’ve always had trouble doing – applying a screen protector.

Those of us who pledged, and gave a few dollars to get them started received a prototype. I was so excited the day it arrived! But the reason you never heard about it from me was that it was awful. And because I’d rather no press than bad press, I shoved my Kioky screen applicator into a drawer and forgot about it.

Yesterday a package arrived in the mail. To my surprise, it was a boxed, branded, genuine sales-ready Kioky perfect fit applicator.

The packaging was really nice. I was impressed. But had the product changed? The picture on the box looked like the same thing I’d received months earlier as a prototype. So I opened the box and withdrew the contents.

Nestled neatly inside the Kioky applicator, I found 3 screen protectors, a cleaning cloth, and a squeegee. And to my delight, the applicator itself looked completely different! I removed the rubberband holding in the extras, and found that one screen protector was already in place and ready to be applied to the screen of my iPhone 4. There was no wiggle room. I knew I had to give it a try, so I gently peeled back the tab labeled 1, and put my iPhone in. It was a perfect fit. When I pulled the iPhone out, the screen protector was in place, and I could already see that the fit was, indeed, perfect. There were a few air bubbles, but there always are, aren’t there.

I imagine the air bubbles will go away within 24 hours as air bubbles are wont to do. Meanwhile, this is actually the firs time in months that I’ve had a screen protector on my iPhone.

And now comes the sad news. After all the months, and the incredible improvement on a product that is so needed, Kioky is no more. I was truly disheartened to learn that young people doing the right thing for the right reasons could be taken advantage of.

You can still buy a Kioky iPhone 4 applicator from BiteMyApple.com for $19.99.
