I couldn’t stand waiting any longer, so yesterday I stopped into Best Buy to see what they had in the way of cases for my new iPhone 4. The short answer, not much. Out of the four cases they had in stock, one I flat out disliked, one was identical to another one I have on order, and the third of the four was just a boring skin. So I went with the fourth case, the Soft Gel Fitted case from Rocketfish, a brand whose name I’m familiar with, but have never before tried.

DSCN0907Best Buy had the Soft Gel Fitted case in a variety of colours, but I went with the pink, just for a change of pace. I loved how it looked in the box, and it felt sturdy when I took it out and fondled it there in the store.

A heavy skin, but not heavy enough to add any substantial bulk to the device. It has a great honeycomb texture on the inside back that gives it some extra shine, but still allows you to see through to the Apple logo.

The fit around the outside is nice and tight, with no wiggle room whatsoever. I still have a Phantom Skinz body guard on my iPhone 4, and this case does poke at the edges a bit, but with a fingernail and some effort, you can get it back down.

As with Apple’s Bumper case, the only sync/charge cord that works with this case is the OEM. After market cords are simply too large to fit. This must be a new phase, and I’m not too happy about it.

The truly disappointing thing about this case, though, is the way it handles the power button and the volume buttons.

You can almost see from the photo that what they’ve done is to puff out the skin around/above the volume buttons. The result is that, while it is certainly protective, you need a small hard object in order to actually depress the buttons through the skin. They would almost have been better off leaving an opening, rather than trying to enclose it. Leaving an opening worked great with the mute switch – it’s accessible and easy to use.

The result is the same for the power button. You can see it a little better in this photo – it just doesn’t quite fit. The gel case is too hard to conform to the buttons.

So while it’s certainly an attractive case, the button covers render it pretty nonfunctional. I’m hoping for better with the next case I get in!
