Hey all you former Palm Treo and Centro users. Remember Directory Assistant? Remember how after a successful run it changed to TryDA? Well it’s now available on the iPhone, and it’s the same app you remember! And just like on Palm, it’s still free! (Powered by some adverts on your results screens.)
One of the first things you’ll do after you install it is to register. You will be doing me a great personal favor if you would enter my personal email address (alli @ allibama dot net) in the referral field. (They are having a referral contest for former users, and with your help I have a good shot!)
Here’s the quick tour:
The home screen offers you a choice of Business, Mobile Web, People, Reverse directory lookup, Directions, Maps, and Last Results. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve used the Reverse lookup on my Palm devices.
These are all the options you need for the 411 that’s important to you. Keep reading after the photo gallery to look more closely at the options.
The first tab is Business, and you can search by Name or Category. I tested the category search by entering “ice cream.” The data is provided by Whitepages.com. There are Baskin Robbins in every strip mall, yet the search only brought one up. I tried a second time using the same category and my zip code without any better luck. The BR located within walking distance wasn’t there, nor is my favorite homemade ice cream parlour just up the road.
I had much better luck searching by name.
Mobile web is a unique search method. I need more time thoroughly investigating this one. You search by brand or keyword, and you’re given a choice of categories.
People gives you a traditional white pages lookup that seems to work well – and fast.
Reverse is still my favorite. Great for when you get those phone calls from numbers you don’t recognize. Just copy them into the reverse lookup and find out who it was!
Directions and Maps are self-explanatory.
TryDA is still a complete information system. If you used it on your Palm – you have been waiting for it on your iPhone. If you didn’t use a Palm, now is your chance to get something great! Get it now in iTunes!
