Ming Thins

Although “Ming Thins” sounds like a cross between a cookie and a space villain, they are actually a stick-on face-lift for your iPhone or iPod Touch. Not a case. Not exactly a protective cover (although each set comes with a screen protector). Allow me to show you mine, and I’ll elaborate further.

Ok, so it almost looks like a case. But if you look closely at the top and bottom, you can see where the iPhone is exposed. It’s basically an iPhone shaped sticker. Much thinner than a Zagg or BodyGuardz – and for me,much easier to install! The last time I installed a protective skin, I messed it up so badly I wound up throwing it in the trash. My biggest problem was that I couldn’t see the cutouts through the clear skin! Much easier working with solid material. The sticky back is forgiving. If you didn’t lay it just right the first (or second!) time, you can easily peel it up for another try.

Lucky thing, cause it still took me a few tries to get the front lined up just right.

As you can see, it changes the whole look of the iPhone. It’s like carrying a whole new device with the Ming Thins on. The only thing I’m not crazy about are the extra cutouts at the top (for an iPod touch maybe?). Otherwise, this is a really clever way to dress up your iPhone/Touch.

While Thins won’t protect your device if you drop it on the concrete, it does provide some protection against those little nicks and scratches that will drive us all to distraction. As I mentioned earlier, the Thins also comes with a screen protector, but I opted not to use it on mine. (I have not been happy with a single screen protector on my 3GS, so I give up for now.)

I’ve heard people say they are using this under clear cases, and I’ve now got my Proporta Steritouch case over my iPhone with the Thins on.  Doesn’t look like an iPhone at all, does it?!

While not cheap, at $24.95, you’ll probably get a lot of use from them, since you can continue putting cases over them and changing your look regularly. I was lucky, and won my Thins by following Mingbrands on Twitter. Definitely worth giving them a look though, as they have quite a selection of colours/patterns. I recommend checking out Larry Greenberg on youtube, as he tries out Thins under an incredible variety of cases.
